Dr. Monique Yohanan says it’s time America rethinks vaccine policy. Vaccines are among medicine’s greatest achievements, as they help to eliminate deadly diseases and protect communities. But in recent years, Dr. Yohanan observed how policy overreach, poor communication, and one-size-fits-all mandates have eroded public trust and, in some cases, undermined the very health outcomes these policies sought to achieve.

“When I think about vaccines, I start with the idea vaccines are incredibly important, but they are not all equally important, and they are not all equally necessary,” Dr. Monique told IW Features in her upcoming documentary “Giving a Dose of Humility on Vaccine Policy.”

Americans deserve policies that protect them from serious disease without fracturing trust, denying children access to school, or sidelining individual medical needs. But according to Dr. Monique, current approaches often fail to distinguish between vaccines that stop deadly, highly contagious threats and those that offer narrower benefits. This disconnect in our system inspired Dr. Monique to pen a tell-all report titled “Rethinking Vaccine Policy,” with the aim of restoring trust in public health by giving people the facts.

Vaccines save lives, but rigid, one-size-fits-all mandates risk eroding trust and missing the mark, Dr. Monique explained. It’s time for a smarter, targeted approach to America’s vaccine schedule that focuses on serious threats, respects individual needs and parental rights, and recognizes that informed consent––not coercion––is the key to lasting public health.
